“The quality that gives pleasure to the mind or senses and is associated with such properties as harmony of form or color, excellence of artistry, truthfulness, and originality.”
MUSICIANS FROM SWEDEN & AMERICA
In 2014 Kalos officially came into fruition, but their history is deeper than meets the eye. Two members grew up together in a small town in Sweden, and two grew up in the Midwest, two met near the Arctic Circle and three serenaded a crowd at a house concert in Paris. All four have created unique and sustainable careers in the arts.
Maria Finkelmeier (percussion), Anna K. Larson (voice), Angela Shankar (clarinet), and Sanna Andersson (cello) created the “Double It” tour in 2014 as their first project, combining their established duos “Clone Duo” and “En Vokalist och En Cellist”. The project consisted of four concerts at unlikely venues celebrating music, food, community, and sustainable living, and a presentation at the innovative community music school n3.
In 2015 the group held an Artist in Residence at Scandinavian Cultural Center in, Boston Usa. The group perfomed concerts in Boston and New York City. 2017 the group spent a week at Avaloch Farm Music Institutet, Boscawen USA where they in addition to their existing repertoar commissioned and collaborated with three composers from USA and Iceland. Kalos also composed a new piece including loop pedal and electronics.
The quartet aims to bring a fresh voice to traditional folk songs, while self-composing and commissioning new works that highlight the innovative nature of this unique combination. Laughs, fashion, wine, and chocolate may have brought these women together as friends, but a passion for art and dedication to discovery will keep them together as a musical entity.
